By now, most parents of PSLE students 2012 cohort would have made their choice with (for) their children on the 2nd next important phrase in their life.

For me, I believe PSLE is so important because the 4 years of secondary school is one of the most important phrase in life. The age 13 - 16 is where a person grows up, where he grows aware of his individuality, where he can be rebellious or productive. It is the golden age where he develops his character which would makes a difference in his whole life.

It is also the age where he makes the friends of his life, friends of the same social-economic background of the school, friends where he can depend and he would be dependent upon, during this phrase of teenage-hood.

It is this period where he would find his next passion for his tasks in life, be it in medicine, science, arts or mechanical stuff. Where his next national exams would determine his entry in his prized career in life.

PSLE is such a do-or-die exam for this phrase, I do hope that it would phrased out, or at least reduced in magnitude by the time I have children. It is not fair to confer such a huge burden on a 12 yo child who is barely gripping with the importance of life.

It is not fair to throw the burdens onto parents.
This is why Singaporeans has such low birth rate.

Below is the Secondary school ranking intake based on PSLE scores of 2012. The table below is compiled by ACE tutors.

* ACS Barker accepts affiliated students only
** Cedar Girls' and Victoria School have started accepting Integrated Program (IP) students at secondary 1 level. Cedar's cut-off for the IP is 258, while Victoria's is 255.

The race for brainy students will heat up when 6 other schools start accepting IP students at secondary 1 level, starting in 2013. These schools include St Joseph's Institution, Anglo Chinese School (Independent), Singapore Chinese Girls', Catholic High, St. Nicholas and Methodist Girls'.

The original data provided by MOE came with the median PSLE scores of each school's new cohort, and most of them are basically additions of 2-9 points from the minimum cut-off points as shown above. The definite trend is therefore that the majority of students take cut-off points as one of their main considerations in their school selection.

SMRT Protests

On the SMRT Chinese workers who are dealt with unequal pay... perhaps this video will show us something.

If monkeys cannot accept unequal pay for same work, then it is no wonder why some of the China workers are pissed off.

But to be fair to SMRT, the Chinese drivers are paid less than other foreigners (Malaysia) as lodging, utilities and transportations are provided for them. These bills can partially explain the difference for the Chinese's lower pay.

Another reason is that Chinese workers back in China mainland are simply paid much lesser. With that as a guideline, corporations can simply pay less because the foreign workers has less choice back home.

And the SMRT China Drivers strike ends.

[Previous blogpost- SMRT Bus Strike for 2nd Day, Minister says STRIKE]
[Previous blogpost:- Uniquely Singapore- Where a strike is not a strike]
[Previous blogpost:- SMRT Foreign Bus drivers on strike]

It is just the 3rd day and the strike has ended. Our first strike in 26 years, and outsourced to Foreign Talents....

SINGAPORE - The SMRT bus drivers who had been on strike for the past two days, causing delays in service, appeared to have returned to work this morning.
Two buses picked up the drivers, who are from China, from their Woodlands dormitory to ferry them to their respective bus depots.

But the aftermaths would be.... difficult.

One can guess how the government should react.

If they did not do anything decisive to punish the Chinese strikers, then many Singaporeans would be unhappy that the government is harsh on locals over strikes but lenient when it comes to foreigners.

If they do much to punish, they may also create the impression that workers' welfare are secondary to corporations' profits.

And it does not help that the government has to juggle the relationship with China, the big giant to our north. Any wrong move perceived as unfair which offend the China public and we may be come the next victim of China's boycott. (Just look at Japan's manufacturers which suffered massively with China and Japan's territorial disputes)

And if it pushes too hard, SMRT would probably has to increase bus fares. (Let's be realistic).
And the public hates public transport fare increases. Especially when MRT has broke down so many times, the public would be suspicious of any fare increases.

Tough job.
I do hope we are paying the ministers enough money.

Snow World Genting for year end Holiday

Snow, one of the nicest thing to see in nature.
Something that we Singaporeans can't enjoy.

I saw my first snow in Boston, USA. But it was in Germany where I really got seduced by the beauty of snow capped landscape.

I visited Munich, Germany recently and it was so beautiful sometimes I forgot how bloody freezing cold it was...
The snow was really refreshing!

Plus, free cold drinks any time!

a nice panoramic photo stitched of the scenery

Since Xmas is coming..... why not see snow in a very nearby place?

Snow World is open and it only takes a short bus journey from Singapore to visit Genting.
You don't have to spend lots of money and time to travel to far north to see snow! =D

And please invite me to go with you... if you're feeling generous :P

You can visit Snow World’s website for more info: http://www.rwgenting.com.sg/en/themepark/rides/indoor/snowworld/index.htm
